Meet the Maker: Katonya Breaux of Unsun Cosmetics – Part I: The Business

What motivated you to start Unsun Cosmetics?

I needed clean sunscreen that didn’t leave a residue and that was tinted with my skin tone in mind.

What would you consider your hero product from your brand?

Unsun Mineral Tinted Sunscreen

What standards/non-negotiables do you take into consideration when thinking about enhancing or developing new products?

All of my present and future products must be good for the consumer and the planet. This includes products that are cruelty-free and does not include any chemical sunscreen actives.

What do you think are some of the biggest challenges for "beauty/wellness" brands today?

One of the biggest challenges for beauty brands is in understanding the need to switch up ingredients to be good for us all. This is very important to us all but clean beauty is typically more expensive and sustainable packaging is limited in the choices available.

What has been one of your proudest moments since creating your brand?

I was proud of many things that have happened since 2016 but our recent Allure Beauty Award was pretty exciting :)

What can we expect in the future from Unsun?

You can expect more clean sun protection on the horizon! We are launching 2 new products this summer.

What advice would you give customers who want to make the most out of your brand?

Customers should wear sunscreen everyday. The myth that sun protection is only needed in the summer is damaging our skin more than we realize. Use your Unsun daily!
